Coaches & Administration

Our coaching and administration staff consists of volunteers from many different volleyball backgrounds. All Stars coaches support the club's philosophy of building young leaders, encouraging all players positively and working with them to improve both on the court and off. We also support all our coaches in their NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) advancement and certification. If you are interested in joining the Stars coaching team, please contact us!

Board of Directors & Head Coaches

Sandy Hancock
President & U14 Head Coach

Sandy has been with the Stars from the start, and has coached U14 and U15 as well as the Youth League. She has coached Elementary school grades 6 and 7, and at Handsworth Secondary school, grades 8 through 10. In her younger days, Sandy was an avid volleyball enthusiast playing indoor and outdoor ball, predominantly beach doubles and triples. More recently, she has taken part in outdoor (recreational level) 6s. In her spare time, she enjoys Irish dancing and step dance.
Dori Howard
Founder & Past-President

Dori founded the Stars club in 2007 with one U14 team. The club has grown since and provides opportunities for young girls to not only play volleyball, but discover more about themselves as ambassadors for the sport and about themselves as individuals in this community. Dori is NCCP Level 2 certified. She played volleyball since age 12 right up to a championship provincial team level in her younger days. She has coached junior high school teams, Jasper Volleyball Camp many years ago, and Grade 9 and 12 teams at Handsworth High School.

In 2020, Dori announced her retirement as President of the Stars. She now lives on Salt Spring Island, focusing her time and energy on creating spaces and places for people to heal, learn, recharge, refuel and grow. She has stayed on the Stars board as Past President to provide oversight, support and leadership during the transition.
Abigail Turner
Vice President

Abigail has been involved with Stars since 2016 after her daughter was first selected for the U14 team. In her high school and university days, Abigail was a volleyball enthusiast and played on numerous teams both at school and in the community. More recently she coached the Windsor High School Girls Bantam Team in 2016 and the Girls Juvenile Team in 2017. Abigail currently sits on the Stars Volleyball Club Board, which she been on since 2018. Abigail is a lawyer by profession, a Partner at Harper Grey LL, working mainly in Health and Insurance Law.
Samantha Mills
Treasurer & U16 Co-Head Coach

Samantha began her volleyball career playing for the Stars during her high school years. In 2018 she returned to the sport by coaching at Stars and Collingwood School during the high school season. Samantha is an NCCP Development coach (formally Level 1). In 2020 she was appointed to the Stars Board of Directors, which she currently sits on as the Treasurer. Outside of volleyball, Samantha is pursuing a career in Real Estate sales with a local Developer. Samantha is very excited to be with Stars after benefitting herself from years of coaches volunteering their time and effort to impact lives through the power of sport.
Laura Pickard
Secretary & U17/18 Head Coach

Laura began coaching with the Stars in 2014, but has been coaching volleyball at various levels since she was just 15. During the school season, she helps coach the Senior Girls team at St. Thomas Aquinas. Laura played club and school volleyball on the North Shore until grade 12, and in 2020 went back to school to play varsity volleyball at CBC, where she currently plays as an outside hitter / serve receive libero. Laura is passionate about the sport and eager to challenge players to unlock their potential and try new things, while making new friends and having some fun along the way. When not on the court, she is a certified web and graphic designer and is currently working in marketing at a local business.
Stephanie Cook
U14 Head Coach

Stephanie grew up on the North shore playing volleyball throughout her high school career at Handsworth as well as for Stars and BCO. She coached for both Handsworth and Stars during the 2015 season. Stephanie returns to the Stars coaching community this year after completing her bachelors degree from the University of Calgary. She is looking forward to getting back into the sport she loves and sharing her passion with others!
Karen Martin
U15 Head Coach

Karen has been coaching with the Stars since 2010. She has coached girls' volleyball on the North Shore, both high school teams and club teams, for 15 years. Since 2010 she has coached at Handsworth. Karen played volleyball in high school, for UBC in 1979 to 1984 (mostly Junior Varsity, but also some Varsity) and then women's club volleyball, followed by many years of co-ed rec ball. She is NCCP certified as an Advanced Development Coach (formerly Level 2).

Karen is passionate about the importance of team sport to teenage girls and is thrilled to be able to coach with the wonderful coaching and club admin team at the North Shore Stars. Karen has two grown daughters who also coach with the Stars from time to time. When she is not on the volleyball court, you can find Karen practicing construction law as a partner at Dentons Canada LLP.
Sara Freyvogel
U16 Co-Head Coach

From the bantam to senior level in high school, Sara played for the Handsworth volleyball team and the Stars as a Left-side/power hitter. Today, she is actively playing volleyball on the SFU club team as well as in some of the community volleyball leagues that run throughout the year. Sara has been coaching with the Stars and Handsworth since 2016 and has been a referee with the LMVOA since 2015. She is also currently studying Psychology and Humanities at Simon Fraser University.
Mikayla Mowat
U17 Sea to Sky Head Coach

Mikayla has been coaching high school volleyball since 2019. She coached for Kingston’s local club team while at Queen’s University and then Little Flower Academy’s Junior team before moving to Whistler and coaching both Whistler Secondary’s Grade 11 teams. Mikayla grew up in Vancouver playing club volleyball, high school volleyball and beach volleyball in the summers. She is eager to further cultivate volleyball in the Sea to Sky region and foster the development and teamwork of the Sea to Sky players! Off the court Mikayla is working as a Wellness Navigator and is completing a graduate certificate in Women’s Reproductive Health.
Rebecca Oxland

Rebecca has been involved with coaching volleyball since 2013 at Handsworth Secondary School, Stars Volleyball Club, and Team BC Summer Games. She played volleyball in North Vancouver for her high school team at Handsworth and on club teams. She went on to study Health Science and play volleyball for the varsity team at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. Rebecca is currently a registered nurse at Lions Gate Hospital. Her role is assisting Stars Volleyball Club with administrative duties and coaching development.

Assistant Coaches

Lise Byers
U14 Assistant Coach

Lise played volleyball throughout high school at both the school (Handsworth) and club (Stars & BCO) levels. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 2019, Lise returned to the North Shore and now works in wholesale sales for a sustainable apparel company. Lise is excited to return to the world of club volleyball and develop her coaching experience this year with Stars!
Eve O'Bryne
U14 Junior Coach

Eve has been playing volleyball since grade 7, and has played club volleyball in Edmonton. She is currently in grade 11 at Sutherland Secondary, where she helped with coaching both the grade 8 volleyball and basketball team. She played for her school's senior team as a left-side hitter, and is very excited to continue coaching this year. As well as to gain more knowledge about what it means to be a coach and to help out Stars this season!
Bianca Umali
U14 Junior Coach

Bianca has been playing club volleyball with the Stars since U14 and has played for the club ever since. She has helped assistant coach the grade 8 and junior team at LGCA, where she also plays on the senior team. Bianca is currently a senior in high school playing for the Stars U17/U18 team. She is eager to grow in her knowledge and experience as a coach by helping out with the U14 team!
Kaitlyn Scheewe
U14 Junior Coach

Kaitlyn has been playing volleyball since 6th grade, and playing for Stars since U14. She had the opportunity to coach her school’s junior team, as well as assist with the bantam and elementary school team. Kaitlyn is currently a senior in high school at LGCA, playing on the senior volleyball team as an outside hitter. She also plays for the Stars U17/18 team, and is excited to progress her coaching experience and assist with the stars U14 team!
Brooke Armstrong
U14 Junior Coach

Brooke has been playing volleyball since grade six, and joined Stars in Grade 8. She is currently in Grade 12 at Handsworth Secondary School. She is passionate about volleyball and enjoys sharing her love for the sport with others. Brooke has helped out with Stars camps over the past few years and has helped coach her school’s Grade 8 volleyball team.
Frankie Paton
U14 Junior Coach

Frankie is a senior at Argyle and has been playing volleyball since 2016. She has helped coach the Argyle Grade 8 girls and boys teams as well as the grade 9 girls team in the past. She loves teaching younger players and is excited to help as a junior coach with the Stars this year!
Allison Hargreaves
U14 Junior Coach

Allison began playing volleyball in grade 5, she then started playing for Stars at U14. She is a grade 10 student at Collingwood school and a member of the Stars U16 team. This is Allison’s first year coaching, and she is very excited to learn all about coaching and help young players develop their skills.
Izzy Hadad
U14 Junior Coach

Izzy has been playing volleyball since grade 5 and has loved the sport ever since. She has been with Stars since U14 and is currently in grade 11 at Collingwood School, where she played on this year’s senior team. Izzy is excited to gain experience as a coach and to help this season’s Stars U14 players develop their skills and passion for this amazing sport!
Emma Dyer
U15 Assistant Coach

Emma began playing club volleyball with the Stars at U14 and has been with the club ever since. She has assistant coached grade 8's at Windsor as well as U14 and U15 Stars teams in the past. Emma graduated from Windsor in 2021 where she played as a middle blocker. She is currently studying at BCIT and is excited to be helping out at Stars for another season!
Natalie Ranspot
U15 Assistant Coach

Natalie grew up on the North Shore and played volleyball through high school and recreationally during her four years at McGill University. She is a NCCP Level 1 certified coach and has been coaching with the Stars since 2013. Natalie also coaches at Handsworth Secondary Schoo1!
Edward Hulshof
U15 Assistant Coach

Ed played competitive beach volleyball for many years, winning cash prizes and obtaining notable finishes in many tournaments, including several appearances at the Vancouver Open (professional beach volleyball tournament), and competed in tournaments in California and Oregon. He competed in the Volleyball BC “Professional Beach Volleyball Tour” for several years. Ed was also voted the 2010 Most Improved Player by the Kitsilano Beach Volleyball Association and finished 9th in Nationals in 2013. He has coached beach volleyball for Urban Rec and have provided private coaching for woman’s doubles (junior high school). He also assistant coached the grade 8 indoor girls’ team at Point Grey in Kerrisdale.
Sophia Kostamo
U16 Assistant Coach

Sophia has been playing club and school volleyball on the North Shore since 2012. Currently studying at UBC, Sophia has previously coached grade 6 and 7's at St. Anthony's Elementary in West Vancouver and has been coaching with the Stars since 2020.
Ella Wigmore
U16 Junior Coach

Ella has played volleyball since grade 7, and played with Stars in Grades 8 through 11. She has helped coach the grade 6/7 volleyball camps out of West Vancouver Secondary School in past years. Ella is a senior in high school with a lot of love for volleyball and she is excited to share that with the U16’s.
Siobhan Finan
U17 Sea to Sky Assistant Coach

Siobhan has been involved in coaching girls' volleyball of all ages, in beach and indoor, over the past ten years. Growing up, Siobhan played high school volleyball at York House School and for Thunder Volleyball Club in Vancouver, BC. She was also selected to play for Team BC in Beach and Indoor Volleyball. At university, she went on to play for five years for the UBC Thunderbirds, winning two national championships along the way. Outside of volleyball, Siobhan works as a Sustainability Advisor and loves to bike and ski. Siobhan is very excited to see the sport of volleyball grow in the Sea to Sky corridor, and is looking forward to the season ahead.
Cristina Botteselle
U17/18 Assistant Coach

Tina's coaching career began in 2017 at Stars and St. Thomas Aquinas, but has been playing since she was young. She grew up playing club and school on the North Shore as a setter and put away her court shoes in grade 12. Today, she still plays often in beach and indoor recreational leagues around the Lower Mainland with friends and was the head coach of the Mulgrave senior team this past season. Outside of volleyball, Tina works as an Educational Assistant as well as an early childhood educator, after finishing her BA in Education from SFU. She is currently working on getting her ECCE Certification as well.
Emily Hardy
U17/18 Assistant Coach

Emily played volleyball on the North Shore for her high school and club for five years, coming back to coach as a Stars Alumna. She graduated from Sutherland Secondary in 2018 and is currently a student studying Applied Animal Biology at UBC. Emily has been coaching with the Stars since she graduated and helped coach at Sutherland before that.
Claire Mackenzie
U17/18 Assistant Coach

Claire has been playing volleyball since her first year at Handsworth Secondary School. She went on to play 5 years at the University of Waterloo and then played 2 years of professional volleyball in Switzerland and Austria. She has coached summer camps at Waterloo and was the head coach of the U15 team in Switzerland. She is now back in North Vancouver studying to be a personal trainer. Claire has a passion for health and fitness, traveling and skiing.
Marisa Gour
U17/18 Assistant Coach

Marisa joined the Stars as a coach in 2018 after playing for the Stars and Handsworth for 5 years. She is now a student at SFU studying Kinesiology. Marisa coached volleyball at Canyon Heights Elementary School from 2014-2018 and is excited to continue to progress her coaching experience with more competitive play at Stars.
Mark St. Georges
Assistant Coach

Mark played competitive volleyball in London, Ontario on his high school and London All-Star teams. Upon moving to Vancouver he played in a variety of leagues: Mens 6's, Co-ed 4's and the King of the Beach 2's. Mark has coached previously at Canyon Heights, Braemar and Handsworth and has been involved with Stars Volleyball since 2015. He is currently an NCCP Level 1 certified coach and is working towards his Level 2.
